SPRINTCAR CHAMPIONSHIP IN HOME STRAIGHT

WITH only four nights of racing remaining the battle is heating up in the Watsons Express Transport Sprintcar Championship at the Perth Motorplex.

Thanks to his win here two weeks ago Jamie Maiolo now leads the prestigious award on 646 points.

Not only was the win a shot in the arm for Maiolo’s championship aspirations but it also gave him a confidence booster going into this weekend’s 26th Michael Nanovich Sprintcar King of Wings.

Another feature race winner this summer in David Priolo is only nine points behind Maiolo on 635 points and his consistency should hold him in good stead in the last few rounds.

The very fast Shaun Bradford is third on 625 and this third-generation gas merchant is a good chance of improving on this and upsetting some of the visitors this weekend.

David Hall, part of the professional two-car Hall Transport team that travels from Albany for every show, is fourth on 622 points, just ahead of Ben Ellement on 622 and David Ellement on 613.

The Ellements have been around speedway all their lives but it must be remembered this is only Ben’s second year in a sprintcar and David’s first.

The former modified sedan racers have been very fast and if they can keep the cars straight should earn plenty more valuable points between now and the end of the season.

The second of the Halls, Greg, is seventh on 596, just ahead of Wayne Russell on 592, John Liddelow on 589 and Scott Milling on 573.

There are plenty of big-name drivers outside the top 10 who can never be discounted this weekend.

Young guns Kris Coyle and Carl Dowling are two drivers who have come through the junior sedan ranks and are both putting together some impressive drivers.

These guys are in it for the long haul and it probably won’t be too long before we see both of them holding up some major trophies on the podium.

Much has been written and said about Luch Monte and Ryan Farrell and given good results this weekend (where either are capable of winning the show) they will move up the track championship.

Allan Nash and Mark Wells are two other drivers to keep an eye on.

Nash has changed from #51 to #7 and is hoping the change will make a difference.

He impressed many early in Bunbury last week with an A Dash win before he then clouted the wall.

Wells, despite limited racing these days, is still capable of capturing the form that saw him beat the best in the country years ago.

There are plenty of people around who would love to see the Geraldton Jet take a long-awaited win.

When we throw other driver such as Pino Priolo, Jason Kendrick, Ian Woods, Marshall McDiarmid, Sean Zemunik, Peter Sinagra, Mat Muir, Jodi Waldron, Jamie Moon, Kent Roberts, Troy Lawson and Rod Howe into the mix it’s going to be one helluva sprintcar show.

More than 40 snarling sprintcars in action at the Perth Motorplex….yeah….I’d like to see that!
