| THERE’s plenty of on offer for the drivers at the 26th Michael Nanovich
Sprintcar King of Wings at the Perth Motorplex this weekend. The winner of the preliminary feature on Friday night pockets $2500, but the big money is on the line for Saturday night. First over the line after the 30-lapper wins $15,000 with $5000 for second and $2500 for third. On top of that the winner, along with the 7th and 17th drivers in the Nanovich Farms Quick Time on Friday night win $500. And the winners of the MG Monte and Sons A and B Dashes on both Friday and Saturday nights win another $250 each. All 24 drivers who qualify for Saturday night’s main event will receive a silver medallion struck especially for this event. The good news is fans can also get hold of some speedway memorabilia too. The silver medals will be available for $50 each and all you need to do is see Jeff Grubisa at the back of the Monte Motorsports truck in the pits. EXPECT to see something different in the racing format this weekend. Apart from the A and B Dashes which each take six cars (the top 12 point scorers) there will also be the Midpack Madness events. This unique race will be for drivers racing for positions 13-18 in the A Main for each night and creates an extra spectacle for the drivers and the fans. THERE won’t be a dry eye in the very big Monte Motorsports camp if Luch Monte wins the main event on Saturday night. Expect to see plenty of emotion all around if Monte is the first car over the line. The event pays tribute to the late Michael Nanovich who lost his life in a motor vehicle accident and had played a big role in Monte’s life. Monte put a new J&J through its paces in the practice session at the Motorplex on Wednesday night in a bid to win the King of Wings tribute race. He is hoping to turn around his luck after two cars were heavily damaged in the last two weekends. The first of these was while he was leading the feature race here two weeks ago, crashing with only a couple of laps remaining. WA chassis guru Geoff Murphy is one of many people putting in the long hours this week to see some of the teams back on track for this weekend’s two big nights. Quite a few cars were heavily damaged in racing incidents in Bunbury last week and a lot of teams have been pulling out all stops to get their machines repaired/replaced. |
