Western Australian racers are preparing to fend off an assault from three truckloads of interstate competitors at tomorrow night’s Aeroflow Outlaw Nitro Funny Car event at Perth Motorplex.
Michael Brooks in Nitro Madness, Andrew Katavatis in Beach Bomb, Anthony Begley in LA Hooker and Matt Abel in Rory Taylor’s Nitro Thunder will be ready to control their turf against the likes of Nitro Express, Let’s Boogie, The Bandit, Dark Horse, The General, One Bad Kiwi and Red Devil.
Brooks is a relative newcomer to racing Outlaw Nitro Funny Cars but said he is aiming for the five second zone this Saturday.
“If I run that five I’d be happy, I’ve got a 32 gallon fuel pump on it now and we are trying to squeeze that little bit more out of it,” he said.
The adrenaline rush is what Brooks aid he works towards following a pass.
“At the moment I’m not really excited, I’m just worn out getting ready,” he said. “I have to work on it, tune it, drive it and make sure I have everything right so the adrenaline rush comes at the end.”
“When that body comes down it is incredible, the whole car is moving, you can see the body shaking opposite to the car, it is like the body is not even attached. I can’t wait to step it up to tell you the truth,” he said.
“Some people say you are along for the ride but I don’t agree with that, you need to be the one in control of it.”
Katavatis has a Paul Shackleton-built 500 cubic inch motor up front and said they are gradually learning the finer points of nitro racing.
“It might be a 5.90 motor but it isn’t going to go 5.90 on our third time out. The processes you have to go through to get you there are incredible,” he said.
“We are not going to beat Nitro Express (time wise) but we are confident we can put a show on and that is what the series is all about. Three guys get a trophy at the end but it is about getting bums on seats.”
The Aeroflow Outlaw Nitro Funny Cars begin with a ‘Salute to the Crowd’ at 5pm and the first round of racing at 6pm.
Sportsman qualifying begins from 11am.
